What is a voice pitch analyzer?
When you speak, your vocal folds open and close many times a second. That rate is your fundamental frequency, written F0 and measured in hertz (Hz): 120 Hz means 120 cycles a second. Listeners hear F0 as how high or low your voice is.
A voice pitch analyzer measures F0 from a recording, many times a second, and summarises it. Your speaking pitch is never a single number — it rises on questions, falls at the end of sentences and dips when you are tired — so the useful results are your median pitch (the middle value of everything you said), the range you mostly speak in and how your pitch is distributed.
This analyzer uses the YIN algorithm, a standard method for finding the period of a voiced sound, and ignores silence, breath and hissing consonants like “s” that have no pitch. Your audio is analysed inside your browser and is never uploaded — this site has no server that could receive it.
How to use the voice pitch test
- Find a quiet room. Music, a TV or a fan in the background can be picked up as pitch. Use your phone’s or laptop’s built-in mic or a wired headset; Bluetooth headsets often switch to a low-quality call mode.
- Press Start recording and allow microphone access when the browser asks.
- Read the passage under the tool in your normal voice, the way you would talk to a friend. Do not perform it. About 30 seconds is enough; the result appears once you have 3 seconds of voiced sound.
- Press Stop. Your median pitch, range and the share of your voice in each band appear below the graph.
- Or upload a file. A voice memo, a video or a podcast clip works if your browser can play it. Use a recording where only you are talking.

Normal speaking pitch ranges for men and women
The ranges most often quoted in voice science are about 85–180 Hz for adult men and 165–255 Hz for adult women. They overlap: a woman speaking at 170 Hz and a man speaking at 170 Hz are both inside their typical range.
| Group | Typical speaking F0 | How this tool shows it |
|---|---|---|
| Adult men | 85 – 180 Hz | Mostly in the male-typical band (below 155 Hz) |
| Gender-ambiguous zone | 155 – 185 Hz | The middle band, where the two ranges overlap |
| Adult women | 165 – 255 Hz | Mostly in the female-typical band (above 185 Hz) |
The 155–185 Hz middle band is a convention used in voice training, not a hard line. People whose median sits there are often heard as either, and other cues decide. Your own number also moves with the time of day, your health and what you are saying, so test a few times before reading much into one result.
Reading your results
- Median pitch is the headline number. It is steadier than the average, because a few squeaks or creaks barely move it.
- Usual range is the 10th to 90th percentile of your pitch: the band you spend most of your time in. A wide usual range means an expressive, melodic voice; a narrow one sounds flatter.
- Band shares tell you how much of your voiced time fell in each range. Two people with the same median can differ here: one stays near it, the other swings above and below.
- The graph shows your pitch over time against the three bands, so you can see where you rise, where you drop and whether sentence endings fall into creak (vocal fry), which shows up as broken, very low points.

Frequently asked questions
What is a normal voice pitch for a male?
Adult men typically speak with a fundamental frequency of about 85–180 Hz. A median below 155 Hz falls in what this tool shows as the male-typical band.
What is a normal voice pitch for a female?
Adult women typically speak at about 165–255 Hz. A median above 185 Hz falls in what this tool shows as the female-typical band.
Does speaking pitch determine gender presentation?
Not on its own. Listeners also use resonance (the vocal tract’s formant frequencies), intonation, loudness and articulation. Pitch in the 155–185 Hz zone can be heard as either, and a voice with a high pitch but dark resonance can still be heard as male. Pitch is one useful, measurable part of the picture.
How accurate is a browser-based microphone pitch analyzer?
On a clean, voiced sound the YIN method used here lands within 1% of the true frequency in our tests on synthetic voice-like tones. Real recordings add error from background noise, very breathy or creaky voice, and low-quality Bluetooth call mics. Use a quiet room and look at the median over 20–30 seconds rather than any single moment.
Is my recording uploaded or stored?
No. The analysis runs in your browser. The audio never leaves your device and nothing is saved after you close the page.
Which audio files can I upload?
Anything your browser can play: usually MP3, M4A, WAV, OGG and the audio track of MP4 or MOV video. The first 15 minutes are analysed.
